From Working from Clients’ Home to 6 Figure Photography Business

photography tips Mar 29, 2021

Back in 2010, I was lugging all of my gear to and from clients' homes for 3 years - a large beanbag, baskets, bowls, different coloured backdrops, and wraps...

I gave birth to my first son in 2013 by C-Section, and I wasn't allowed to drive for 6 weeks.

One of my clients had a new baby around the same time and was insisting that she wanted me to take her newborn baby photos at my home.

My bedroom was one place where it was possible to have her photo taken. There is a big window with natural light in my bedroom. I used my bed as a posing bed, the dresser as a changing table, and the white vintage wardrobe and chair as a backdrop.

Yes, I had so much self-doubt. I was worried that she would judge me and think that my place didn't look professional. I was afraid that she would be disappointed that I didn't have a big or fancy space.

But I reminded myself, I am here to serve; I am here to create beautiful photos and memories for you. And I did! Every single time, I have gone beyond my clients' expectations.

Soon I realised how great to have my own space where I can welcome my clients, and make them feel at home. I can control the light, and the background, and create the style that I love. So I started using my bedroom as my home studio and creating beautiful photos. Soon, my business started taking off the ground.

I used to think running a successful photography business required a fancy studio, filled with trendy props, backdrops, studio clothing, and equipment. I spent so much money and focused on those things to keep up with trends and keep my work fresh. My studio was filled with shelves full of props and equipment, and it never seemed enough!

I know some new photographers would have loved to start their business, but have given up on the idea because they don’t think they can afford the cost of setting up a studio and buying props and equipment.

I can tell you building a profitable photography business can be simple and affordable.

If you ask what my secrets for building a successful photography business?

I can tell you it's not about having all those fancy things. Here are my tips:

1. Start NOW and Start SMALL.

You don't have to be perfect to start your business, you just need to get started.

2. Invest EDUCATION in yourself

Everyone can buy the same cameras or lenses we have, but no one else has the unique set of knowledge and skills we have learned. It’s only YOU who can make the difference!

3. Follow your HEART to create your style

Don't compare yourself with others. Trust your own vision. Because it's only you who can create the style with your unique talent.

4. Have a streamlined workflow and business framework.

We only have 24 hours a day. We work for our life and we don’t live to work.

I hope this post empowers you to follow your dreams, overcome your limiting beliefs, and build a profitable business with passion and compassion, so you can live the life you love!

I want you to remember, that if I can do it SO CAN YOU!

Much love,

Shan x
