Lesson Learnt on Post Production

photography tips Feb 23, 2021

What lesson have I learned throughout the post-production of all my clients' photos?

I used to think I had to be a Photoshop guru to become a successful photographer. I had to learn all the Photoshop techniques and spent hours making my photographs amazing. I signed up for so many Photoshop training courses. And the more I learned, the more I felt overwhelmed, because Photoshop techniques are limitless!

I soon realised I didn't have a passion for spending hours in the 'digital darkroom' editing my photos. My passion is meeting new people and capturing their precious moments - that’s what makes my heart sing.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Photoshop. I think it’s truly one of the most amazing tools for artists.

So I learned to focus on how to create the best photos straight out from the camera with lighting, shoot angles, composition, and capturing the connections between people. So that I can avoid spending my precious time on editing photos and have more time for the things I love.

When I’m able to create the best photos straight out from the camera, Photoshop retouching only becomes the icing on the cake for me.

This not only pushes me to become a better photographer every day but also saves me lots of time working in front of the computer.

I have more time to learn, to grow, and to spend with my family!

That brings me excitement and joy every day by doing something I love!

My newborn shoot is about 1.5 to 2 hours and I only spend around 1 hour time on post-production (Lightroom editing and Photoshop retouching) for each client. My average sale is around $1000 per newborn shoot.

In my training and coaching I guide my students step by step through simple Lightroom editing and Photoshop retouching, sharing the presets and actions I use to help them to create their unique style.

So... lesson learned - you don’t have to know everything or be a guru of everything to become a successful photographer. You just need to focus on your ‘zone of genius’ and your passion.

I wish you success in your business and life!

Much love,

Shan x
